When Robin dutifully called that evening, she told him that she felt better, had eaten a big dinner and made a doctor’s appointment for the following morning (none of which were true).

“That’s great. Onwards and upwards, girl,” was his response. The call was brief.

The next time Robin came home, he avoided any mention of how low Nan had been. He didn’t hug her, let alone initiate sex, and spent a lot of the weekend murmuring into his phone as work demanded “so much time and energy”. Although the girls greeted him warmly, once he had heard the Welsh twang in their speech and told them to “speak properly”, they avoided him. None of them was sad to see him leave on that Sunday evening.

In fact, for the first time, Nan was actively glad. Yes, it was incredibly tough, but at least she knew what to feel, how to behave, when she relied only on herself. Robin was right, she needed people, but the only ones she knew here were Dewi (who was busy), Harri (who was avoiding her for some reason) and Gwenno (who was frantic). But she knew that she had to talk to someone soon, or go under. The girls needed her, so she had to try harder. She texted Gwenno before her pride had time to protest.

Hi there. Hope you’re OK. Your mum tells me life is pretty busy. Wondered if you fancied that dog walk some time. Shadow still needs leading astray… Nan
